Fashion Revolution Week: 5 Tips for a More Sustainable Wardrobe

Tips for Sustainable Style

It’s Fashion Revolution Week, and if that overstuffed wardrobe full of impulse buys is starting to whisper “what were you thinking??” every time you open it, it might be time to face the music (and the mess).

But don’t panic—this isn’t a guilt trip. No one’s about to shove you into a hemp sack or ban you from shopping forever. This is about easy wins: simple swaps, better habits, and small changes that actually make a difference.

Tips for Sustainable Style

Simple Swaps to Build a More Eco-Friendly Wardrobe

Here are five practical ways to shop more sustainably and dress with intention—no wardrobe overhauls, no spending bans, just straightforward tips for anyone who wants to do better but isn’t sure where to start.

Ditch the Disposables

Fast fashion and throwaway accessories might seem like a bargain but they’re costing us more than we realise. Cheaply made, poor-quality pieces often turn skin green and fall apart within weeks, ending up in landfill and back on your shopping list.

That pretty piece of jewellery in your cart? Check the materials before you checkout. Recycled metals, gold-filled finishes, and responsibly sourced stones aren’t just feel-good buzzwords—they’re longer lasting, less wasteful, and kinder to your skin and the planet.

Support Small, Independent Brands

If you’re not shopping from small brands, you’re missing out. Period. Fashion Revolution Week is all about questioning the system, and that means supporting businesses that are doing things differently.

Independent brands are the ones leading the way with better materials, fairer practices, and more transparency. Plus, the quality is miles better. Ditch the fast fashion, and make the switch to shopping from indie brands that actually care. (Not to be too cheeky, but Oh My Clumsy Heart is a great place to start!)

Buy Less, Choose Better

You’ve heard it before, but it bears repeating: less is more. Fast fashion churns out trends faster than anyone can keep up, and most of it ends up in the bin. For Fashion Revolution Week, it’s time to be a little more intentional about your purchases.

Focus on clothes that feel good, go with everything, and won’t unravel after one wash. And please, for the love of your wardrobe, don’t fall for trends that’ll be so last season by the time your order arrives. Think timeless staples, not temporary thrills. A capsule wardrobe beats a chaotic one every time.

Thrift It, Baby

Thrifting isn’t just about snagging a bargain, it’s about finding treasures no one else will have. It's your secret weapon for creating standout style and building a wardrobe that’s totally yours. Preloved clothes? They’ve got character—and that’s exactly what your wardrobe needs.

But it’s not just about your wardrobe. Thrifting is also a quiet rebellion against fast fashion. Every time you rescue an item from the second-hand rack, you’re saving it from landfill and giving it a second shot at life. Meanwhile, you’re pushing back against mass-produced, disposable trends.

Take Care of What You’ve Got

Most people take better care of their wardrobe than their jewellery—and that’s saying something. Tangled chains, tarnished rings, and broken clasps don’t just happen on their own. They’re the result of neglect. A bit of care goes a long way.

It doesn’t take much. Cold washes, line drying, and the occasional repair job will keep your clothes looking fresh. Jewellery deserves the same attention: store it properly (not in a tangled pile), clean it now and then, and please stop wearing it to the gym. The better you treat your things, the longer they’ll stick around.

There you go. Five changes that’ll make you feel like an eco-hero, without having to completely overhaul your entire life. Start small, make those changes, and you’ll be well on your way to a more thoughtful, sustainable wardrobe. Fashion Revolution Week is just the beginning!
