How to Support Small Businesses

Supporting Small Businesses

There's a lot of power in where we choose to spend our money. One small purchase can make a big difference. When you buy from an independent business, you're buying one of a kind gifts handmade with love. You know exactly who made your gift and where with customisable options, and personalised customer service. You're supporting an individual, helping them to pay back into the community and keeping their business alive. There's plenty of reasons why shopping small and supporting independent makers is important.

Many of us shop online especially during the holidays. Avoiding big brands and box stores can be tricky. Particularly when you're in a rush, looking for ideas, and getting short on time. This shopping guide will help with gift ideas. But if you're looking for tips on how best to support your favourite small businesses, keep reading.

Start Shopping Earlier

The rush of gift buying gets later and later each year, which makes it difficult for small businesses to plan for. Stock management becomes impossible, products sell out, and restocks won't arrive in time. If you can, plan your purchases and start gift shopping earlier. It means independent makers can manage their workload, and keep your favourite products in stock so you can buy meaningful gifts that arrive in time.

Be Patient With Delivery

Unlike big brands, small businesses are run by only a few people. Products are made-to-order, and dispatch is slower. During the holidays, postal delays are inevitable and orders take longer to arrive. We really appreciate your patience during these times, and we know other small businesses do too. Order your gifts early to avoid delays, or opt for a faster delivery option if your order is urgent.

Shop In Person

Handmade markets are popular throughout the year, especially during the holiday season. If your favourite independent maker is attending a craft fair, consider shopping in person instead of ordering online. It's a chance to buy all your holiday gifts, and support small businesses at the same time. Follow makers on social media and subscribe to their newsletters to find out when their next market is.

Subscribe To Newsletters

It can be difficult remembering the name of your favourite small businesses and independent makers. The best way to stay in touch is to subscribe to their newsletters. Unlike big brands who bombard you with pushy emails encouraging you to spend; smaller brands send more meaningful (and less frequent) newsletters. Our own Style Letters focuses on slow fashion, capsule wardrobes, and simple living.

Social media helps raise awareness of a brand, and helps them to connect with new customers who might be interested in their products. Small businesses rely heavily on the word of mouth from the big three: Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. Wherever you are online, share your new purchase and tag the maker to help support the businesses you love.

Write A Review

If you love a small business and the products they make, write a review. They are one of the biggest ways to support your favourite makers. We're more likely to make a purchase if others confirm that it's a good decision. So when you receive a reminder to review your most recent purchase, take the time to write a quick sentence or two. Not only will you help them make more sales, you'll also make their day.
